Besides that, it doesn't mean that much, except Bartolo Colon's spot as the apparent Game 3 starter comes into further question. Colon looked awful.
TERRIBLE START FOR BART: Colon lasted just three innings. I got into the fact that he may be tired in an earlier blog. I go further into what the next week could hold in terms of how the Yankees figure out their Game 3 starter here.
E-6: Derek Jeter played just four innings and committed two errors.
ARE WE IN SCRANTON?: By the the sixth inning, it sure looked that way. With the Yankees getting smacked, Andruw Jones was in left, Jorge Posada was at first and Eduardo Nunez was at second, but the rest of the lineup were from Triple-A Scranton. Jesus Montero was behind the plate. Ramiro Pena played short. Brandon Laird was at third. Chris Dickerson in right and Greg Golson in center joined Jones in the outfield.
BIG DEBUTS: The 6-foot-9 Dellin Betances and the 6-foot-11 Andrew Brackman made their debuts. New York-bred Betances, who attended David Wells' perfect game as a fifth grader, didn't give up any hits, but walked four and hit a batter to force in a run in his 2/3 of inning. He gave up two runs before getting yanked. For more on Betances' great New York story, read my spring training piece here.
Brackman, who had an up-and-down minor league season, threw 1 1/3 scoreless.
THREE-HIT MONTE: Jesus Montero, who the Yankees may consider as the backup catcher in the playoffs, had three hits, including a two-run double in the seventh. Montero started at catcher and seemed to do fine behind the plate.
NO MOORE: Super Prospect Matt Moore made his starting debut for the Rays. In five scoreless innings, he struck out 11 Yankees. According to Elias, the 11 Ks matches the most strikeouts in a game by a pitcher whose first major league start came against the Yankees. The other pitcher with 11 was Luis Tiant, who struck out 11 for the Indians on July 19, 1964. Not too bad.
WHAT IS NEXT: The hated Red Sox come to town, trying not to completely collapse. The pitching matchups for the weekend are the following: Friday, Jon Lester (15-8, 3.15 ERA) vs. Freddy Garcia (11-8, 3.70 ERA). Saturday, Tim Wakefield (7-7, 5.08) vs. A.J. Burnett (10-11, 5.28). Sunday, TBD vs. Ivan Nova (16-4, 3.62).
QUESTION OF THE NIGHT: Who should start Game 3 of the ALDS?
