Yankees being no-hit through five

Max Scherzer has a no-hitter going against the Yankees through five innings.

His bid for a no-no almost ended very early. The closest the Yankees have come to getting a knock was when Derek Jeter led off the bottom of the first with a long shot to deep right center. Austin Jackson made an athletic catch, sprinting toward the edge of the warning track, extending his glove and making the play.

The Yankees have had chances against Scherzer. In the first, two-out walks to Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez brought up Mark Teixeira. Teixeira popped up to end the inning.

In the fifth, Nick Swisher's one-out walk preceded Russell Martin being hit by a pitch. But Brett Gardner softly lined out to third and Jeter grounded out.

In his career, Scherzer is 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA against the Yankees. His career-high for pitches is 127. He has thrown 82 thus fa.
