Derek Jeter offered up his theory of why Andy Pettitte decided to unretire after a year off: "Maybe Momma got a little tired of him a little bit, told him to come back out here and pitch.''
It was said in jest, of course, and Jeter was clearly delighted to have his old Core Four buddy back in pinstripes. "It's great,'' Jeter said. "Andy''s just a good guy. He's a good person. He's done a lot for the organization. All the guys love him. He''ll add to our team, on the field, off the field. I haven't heard too many people say bad things about Andy Pettitte.''
And when he was asked if he thought Pettitte could shake off a year's worth of diamond rust and return, at age 39, to the form he showed in the first half of the 2010 season, the Captain offered this charactersitically Jeterian nugget of positive thinking: "Yeah, why not? I don't think he would come back if he didn't think that.''
