Don Zimmer, former Yankees bench coach and current Rays senior adviser, has been hospitalized for the last week because of kidney problems and is expected to start dialysis treatment.
"His kidneys are bad," son Tom Zimmer told the Tampa Times. "But dialysis is something you can get for a long time. He's going to be fine."
Zimmer, 81, is supposed to be released from the hospital on Thursday, the paper said. He has been hospitalized three times over the past five weeks because of various ailments, according to the report.
His son told the paper Zimmer should be back with the Rays soon.
A spokesman for the Rays could not be immediately reached for further details.
