Eduardo Nunez, who has struggled in the field for the past two seasons, was sent down to AAA Scranton today, one day after making two errors at third base Thursday night against the Rays, resulting in two unearned runs. Nunez was sent down to clear a roster spot for Eric Chavez, , who returned to the lineuip tonight after being out of action for nine days following a concussion.
''We asked Nunie to do some things that you usually ask more of a veteran player to so, to play third, short, second, left, right,'' Joe Girardi said. "And for the best interests of him and us moving forward, we thought it was probably more important he goes down and plays shortstop six days a week and maybe second base a day a week."
Nunez made 20 errors in limited duty last season, and already had four in 68 chances this season, three at third and one at shortstop. He also was charged with an error in left-field that was overturned by Joe Torre last week.
With Nunez back in the minors, Jayson Nix will serves as the backup SS and 2B behind Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano.
I'll have a full story up on the website soon.
