Stat of Series

The Yankees entered this series in first place in the AL East, while the Red Sox sat in last place in the division.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time the Yankees and Red Sox faced each other this late into the season (by calendar date) when the Yankees sat at the top of the standings and the Red Sox at the bottom was a three-games series at the end of 1932.

Boston Blues

The Yankees lost a second straight heartbreaker on Sunday night, 3-2, as Pedro Ciriaco was the Red Sox hero again with a go-ahead hit in the 10th inning. According to Elias, the last player with a go-ahead RBI in the ninth inning or later in consecutive games against the Yankees was the Angels' Wally Joyner on September 12-13, 1989.

The Yankees turned five double plays in the game, the most ever by the team against the Red Sox in the Live Ball era.

Four of them were induced by Hiroki Kuroda, matching the most GIDP by a Yankees pitcher against the Red Sox since 1920. The others were Eddie Lopat (1951), Bud Daley (1961), Fred Beene (1973) and Joba Chamberlain (2009).

Century of Bronx Bombers

The Yankees' rally came up short on Saturday as well, as they lost 8-6 on a game-winning triple by Ciriaco in the ninth inning. The only other Red Sox player since 1950 with a go-ahead triple in the ninth inning or later against the Yankees was Dave Stapleton in 1982 off Mike Morgan.

Mark Teixeira did his best to keep the Yankees alive with a two-run homer in the eighth inning to tie it at 6-6.

Since 1950, he is the fourth Yankee to hit a two-out, game-tying home run in the eighth inning or later versus the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Tony Kubek (1960), Roy White (1977) and Johnny Damon (2009) also did it.

The Yankees hit three homers in this game, bringing their total to 159 for the season -- the most hit through 100 games in franchise history and the sixth-most for any team in MLB history.

They also allowed a homer, their 112th of the season, which is tied for the third-most allowed through 100 games by a Yankee team.

Perfect Ten

The Yankees opened the series with a 10-3 win over Boston, blasting three home runs in the blowout. Raul Ibanez went deep first, joining Enos Slaughter and Jorge Posada as the only Yankees age 40 or older to homer against the Red Sox.

Russell Martin followed with a fourth-inning two-run shot, his fourth homer as a No. 9 batter against the Red Sox.

In the last 50 seasons, the only Yankee with as many homers from the No. 9 spot against the Red Sox is Scott Brosius, who also had four.

Finally, Curtis Granderson delivered the biggest blow with a grand slam to make it 10-3. My colleague in Stats & Information, Dan Braunstein, noted that it was the 10th homer Granderson hit against a pitch 93 MPH or faster this season, the most in baseball.
