Eppley header video going viral?

This is not the way Cody Eppley wanted to become famous, but it's a pretty good bet that the video of him getting clonked right on the NY logo in the front of his ballcap by a toss from Eric Chavez will be seen by a lot more people than actually saw it happen in the sixth inning of Tuesday night's Yankees-Tigers game.

Yanks reliever Cody Eppley got bonked Tuesday night in Motown (watch the video here). It was not Eppley's fault, because right after Mark Teixeira scooped Chavez's throw on Jhonny Peralta's groundout for the second out of the inning, home plate umpire Bob Davidson (that man again!) flipped him a new baseball, persuading the Yankees reliever to assume that the infield ball would not be coming back to him.

And it wasn't Chavez's fault, either, since he didn't know Davidson had put a new ball in play.

It was just one of those things that sometimes happens in a sporting event -- and make hilariously entertaining video clips, especially since Eppley wasn't hurt.

"I didn't even feel it,'' he said.

Eppley was even more surprised to see Joe Girardi and assistant trainer Mark Littlefield rush out to the mound. "I was like, 'What now?'" he said.

"I don't know what happened, to be honest with you,'' said Chavez, who had a look of horror on his face as the ball homed in on Eppley's noggin. "Of all the places to hit him, right in the head.''
