CC Sabathia is scheduled to throw a bullpen Tuesday in preparation for a possible return to the Yankees' starting rotation against the Indians in Cleveland on Friday night, although manager Joe Girardi would not commit to it.
"Everything is OK so far," Girardi said. "We'll see how he comes out of that tomorrow, and if everything's good we'll decide where we're going to slot him in."
Sabathia went on the disabled list Aug. 9 with what the team has labelled left elbow inflammation, a condition Sabathia first experienced during a complete-game victory over the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 3. He is eligible to come off the DL on Thursday and has insisted he is pitching on Friday, but Girardi refused to confirm that.
"Well, I want to see how he comes out of his bullpen before we make a decision, and how much he throws," Girardi said. "I just want to play it by ear. There's nothing that would say he's not going to pitch."
