Pregame notes: Andy, Al and Phelspie

Andy Pettitte, recovering from a broken left ankle suffered on June 28, played catch again on Friday and will increase the intensity of his throwing on Saturday, but is still not ready to throw off a mound.

Alex Rodriguez, recovering from a broken left hand suffered on July 25, will take some dry swings -- with both hands on the bat -- for the first time since the injury sometime this weekend.

• Unless he is needed in long relief Friday night, David Phelps will take Ivan Nova's place in the rotation and start Monday night against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium. In the event Phelps is needed Friday night, Joe Girardi said he could start Tuesday and Phil Hughes would go on Monday. Nova went on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with an inflamed right rotator cuff.

CC Sabathia, who spent the first eight seasons of his career as a Cleveland Indian, will make his first start after spending 15 days on the DL with left elbow inflammation. Sabathia is 2-1 with a 3.03 ERA in five career starts against his former team.

• No one in Friday night's Yankees lineup has ever faced Indians starter Corey Kluber.
