BALTIMORE -- After really working out for the first time, Mark Teixeira thought he maybe be able to return from his injured calf as soon as Friday. Joe Girardi was encouraged, but wasn't as optimistic.

"I'm not anticipating it," Girardi said of Teixeira starting on Friday. "We'll see how he feels tomorrow and watch him go through what he needs to go through and then make a decision."
Girard always favors giving himself some wiggle room, but it is very doubtful Teixeira will play on Friday. Saturday seems like a real possibility, barring a setback.
Teixeira said he is not 100 percent yet, but he is very encouraged. He not only ran about 10 or 12 "sprints," but he took batting practice.
"I'd like to play [Friday,]" Teixiera said.
Teixeira hurt the calf on Aug. 27. At the time, Girardi thought it could be seven-to-10 days at best. Teixeira is now 10 days in. Teixeira strained the muscle running out of the box on a foul ball that day. He ended up walking and scoring, which further aggravated the calf.
In 119 games, Teixiera is hitting .255 with 23 homers and a team-leading 81 RBIs.
