It's been nearly a week since sources inside the Yankees organization leaked the news that the club and Ichiro Suzuki were nearing completion on a two-year, $12 million deal to bring back the 39-year-old as their everyday right fielder for 2013.
And still, the deal is not done.
Today, sources told me the two sides are "almost there," but there was still "some language being worked out."
Whether that means in Japanese or English, I don't know. Also, the source -- who is well-versed in the matter -- did not know if Ichiro was in Japan or the U.S., and was pretty sure he had yet to take his physical, the last hurdle before any contract becomes official.
All of that notwithstanding, the source insisted the contract will be done "soon," maybe before the end of the week, when the Yankees close down shop for the holidays.
