First Pitch: Joba roles

TAMPA, Fla. -- Back in 2007, Joba Chamberlain was a wunderkind. He could be the next Rocket or the next Rivera. All anyone seemed to know for sure was that he was going to be the next something.

Now, here in 2013, he is an unpredictable case. He is slated to be the lead-in act for David Robertson and Mariano Rivera. If both of them pitch like they are capable, Joba has no upward mobility.

But I think Joba is going to come out strong. He looks to be in very good shape -- and I know that is a very spring-training-like thing to say. But he is slimmed down and I think very well could have a big year.

If Mo does retire, I wouldn't count Joba out just yet as the Yankees' closer of the future.

ON DECK: Maybe today is the day for Mo's big announcement.

IN THE HOLE: The Yankees' clubhouse will open from 9:10 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. so look for some new stuff from Wallace Matthews and me shortly after.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: DO YOU THINK JOBA COULD BE THE CLOSER OF THE FUTURE?
