Nunez hit by pitch, leaves game

DETROIT -- The already injury-depleted New York Yankees suffered another loss Friday when Eduardo Nunez, already filling in for the injured Derek Jeter at shortstop, was forced to leave the game against the Tigers after being hit with a pitch in the fourth inning by Doug Fister.

The pitch, an 88-MPH fastball, appeared to hit Nunez in the upper right chest as he turned to avoid it. Nunez’ face registered obvious pain as he fell to the ground. He was helped off the field by manager Joe Girardi and a team trainer, and was replaced in the game by Jayson Nix.

Nunez is batting .364 in early-season action with four hits in 11 at-bats. There was no immediate word on his condition.
