Notes: Nova needs to be more aggressive

Ivan Nova was happy with his improvement over his first start. He went from 4 2/3 innings of four-run ball to five innings of two-run ball. Plus, he got a win instead of a loss.

Still, Nova thinks there is more. As has often been his custom, he pitched out of jams, limiting the Diamondbacks to just two runs, despite facing trouble in each of the first three innings. Using a tremendous curve, he seemed to get better in the big spots.

"That's something I have to do, I have to be aggressive from the beginning," Nova said.

Joe Girardi thought that the long layoff -- 10 days between starts -- may have caused some rust. Girardi felt like Nova got better in the fourth and the fifth. It could be something to build on.

PENNING THE VICTORY: Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera combined for four scoreless innings of one hit ball. They walked no one and struck out three.

NO HOMERS: The Yankees have only allowed eight homers all season. Detroit, who has allowed the fewest in the AL, entered Tuesday having given up seven.

CC HONORS HIS HERO: CC Sabathia wanted to pay an extra tribute to Jackie Robinson.
