Rapid Reaction: Orioles 3, Yankees 2 (10)

WHAT IT MEANS: Phil Hughes bounced back, but the Vidal Nuno magic ended, at least for one night.

BUCK-LE UP: The third pitch Nuno threw to Nate McLouth, McLouth drilled for the game-winning homer. It was remnants of the 2012 magic for Buck Showalter's team.

THAT WAS BETTER: After going just two-thirds of an inning his last time out, Hughes went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, including two solo homers. He struck out five and walked two. It was a very solid, bounce-back performance.

THANKS, BUDDY: After two scoreless frames, ex-Yankee and Hughes' buddy Chris Dickerson jacked a solo shot off Hughes in the third.

It was a very frustrating sequence for Hughes. He was up 0-2 in the count before Dickerson fought back to make it 3-2 and then on the 10th pitch, Dickerson crushed a 93-mph fastball.

Hughes only gave up one run in the inning, but it could've been much worse. He allowed two, two-out singles before Adam Jones nearly put together an Earl Weaver special. Instead of a three-run homer, Brett Gardner made the inning-ending catch with his back against the wall.

In the fifth, though, Dickerson wasn't done with Hughes. This time, Dickerson deposited a 91-mph fastball to tie the game at two.

ON TOP: Entering Tuesday, when the Yankees scored first, they won. In the first, Gardner doubled to lead off and scored on a Travis Hafner two-out single. Both hits were deflected off Orioles' gloves.

The Yankees entered 19-0 when scoring first.

In the fourth, after Hughes gave back the lead, Vernon Wells started the inning off with a double and came home on another Hafner RBI single.

NATE THE GREAT: Hughes gave up a single to McLouth to begin the game but then retired the next three Orioles. By the way, McLouth was perfect in his last 10 at-bats off Hughes before he finally got him to fly out in the third.

WAY TO GO, KID: In the 10th, with the score tied, Joe Girardi gave the ball to 25-year-old Preston Claiborne. The rookie did a fine job, allowing just an infield hit in his scoreless inning.
