ICHIRO RESTS: With the Yankees having lost four straight heading into the Boston series, Joe Girardi said that he wasn't playing Brennan Boesch over Ichiro Suzuki because Ichiro is not that good anymore. It is just to give the old guy some rest.
On Wednesday, Boesch had three hits, including a home run.
"I'm also thinking long-term, too," Girardi said. "Seventeen days in a row here. It is getting hot. You have to make sure. Sometimes you can think of [Ichiro] as a young guy, but he is one of those guys with some age on him too."
Ichiro's OPS is .649. By comparison, Jayson Nix's OPS is .618.
CANO AT NO. 2: While remaining noncommittal, Girardi sounded as if he may keep Robinson Cano at the No. 2 spot against righties even when the full complement of players return.
Girardi also wouldn't say, barring a setback, that Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis will be at Yankee Stadium on Friday, even after it was pointed out to him that the GM of the team had already stated it.
