SEATTLE -- After four innings today, Jayson Nix had cost the Yankees a run. After seven innings, he had won them a game.
Nix bobbled what looked like a sure double-play grounder in the fourth, leading to the Mariners first -- and as it turns out, only -- run of the game. But his RBI singles in the fifth and seventh more than made up for it as the Yankees went on to win 3-1, earning Andy Pettitte the 250th win of his career.
"Nix has swung the bat really well for us," Joe Girardi said. "That's why we put him in the two-hole against lefties, because he's done a really good job. To get us that tack-on run, the third one, was extremely important."
-- Vernon Wells' last at-bat on Friday was a line drive scorched right at Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager to end the game with a runner at second. Wells was disappointed at the time -- the Yankees lost 4-1 -- but it may be a sign that things are beginning to turn around for him. Saturday, he had two singles, his first multi-hit game since May 13, and only his third hit in his last 29 at-bats.
"I've been making too many right turns [back to the dugout] and not enough left turns [towards second base]," Wells said. "You kind of chuckle and shake your head, know that eventually it’s going to turn around. That’s the only thing that’s kept me from snapping; I’ve had some good at-bats, hit some balls hard, but obviously the results are all that matters. Today I took some good swings, found some holes and hopefully I can continue doing that for a good stretch here."
Wells' two-hit day raised his batting average to .241.
-- Brett Gardner had a big day, doubling twice, singling once, and scoring on the second of Nix's two RBI singles.
-- Kevin Youkilis, who just came off the DL with a lumbar spine sprain, had to slide into first to retire Raul Ibanez in the second inning. He walked through the clubhouse with a large ice pack wrapped around his lower back, but Girardi insisted he was fine. We'll see tomorrow.
-- Asked how he felt about seeing the sons of Pettitte and another former Yankee, Paul Quantrill, get drafted today, a laughing Rivera said this: "C'mon, man, why you asking me that question? What do you want me to tell you? There’s only one word for that and I ain’t gonna say it."
Let me guess. The word is "bald?"
