Rose to 'roid cheats: Come clean

Pete Rose and Alex Rodriguez have built a relationship over the years. Rose has heard the news that A-Rod possibly could be banned from baseball over Biogenesis, and if Rose could give A-Rod one piece of advice, it would be to admit everything -- the sooner, the better.

"If I could say something about [Ryan] Braun or anybody else, I wish they could take notes from what I did and come clean as quickly as you can," Rose said on ESPN Radio's "The Herd with Colin Cowherd". "Don't lie if you did something. OK. I kind of wish that I could go around to all the minor league camps during spring training and talk to these guys and tell them what not to do and tell them to look at what happened to me and go from there. I think I could get through to some of these guys who are thinking about taking steroids or thinking about doing this, thinking about doing that. When you are 18, 19, 20 years old, it is very easy to be led down the wrong path. It seems like we all think we can get away with something."

Rose said A-Rod's problem has always been his self-esteem -- he lacks it. Rose could never understand why a player so talented and successful needs so much reassurance.

"All the texts that I got from A-Rod -- and I got a lot of them and I texted him back -- they were all about his confidence," Rose said. "For a guy making $25 million to $27 million, hitting 50 home runs and driving in 120 runs, hitting .300, I've never seen a guy that was so lack[ing] confidence, like he was. All he needs is for someone to pat him on the ass every damn time and tell him how good he is and how good he was. I don't know him off the field that well. I've seen him a couple of times. I've been out with him a couple of times. All I know is he loves to talk about the game. He loves to talk about the history of the game. He likes to talk about Babe Ruth. He likes to talk about Henry Aaron or Willie Mays. He just seemed to get a glow in his eyes when you talk about that. What am I hearing now, they are going to suspend him for life possibly?"

QUESTION: Is the best strategy for A-Rod to just come clean?
