Source: Gardner worth a No. 4 starter

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Brian Cashman did his final press briefing of the Winter Meetings on Wednesday afternoon -- at poolside. Cashman did not say that much, so let's have fun with some notes:

WHAT DO THE YANKEES WANT FOR GARDNER? For the Yankees to make a deal for Brett Gardner, they need to fetch a quality No. 4 starter or an everyday infielder, according to sources.

"It will be tough," Cashman said of moving Gardner.

The Yankees maintain they are just listening on Gardner.

SECOND BASE MARKET: The Yankees like Omar Infante, but it is doubtful they would go to four years for him. The Yankees would possibly go to three. He reportedly wants $8 million per year.

SANTANA UPDATE: The agent for Johan Santana, Peter Greenberg, presented Cashman with a list of his clients and Cashman said he had interest in some and not others. Cashman said he wanted to talk more about Santana, for example, but not former Yankee Freddy Garcia.

FOURTH OPTION: Dellin Betances was out of options, but Cashman said he qualifies for a fourth option. What does that mean? Well, it means Betances can be back in Triple-A as a reliever this year.

"It is to our benefit," Cashman said. "I'm sure he is not all that pumped about it."

If Betances didn't have the option, he would have to be on the big league roster or the Yankees would risk losing him through waivers.

The 6-foot-8 Betances transitioned to the bullpen at Triple-A in 2013 and did well. The Yankees think he might have a future, but now they won't have to force it this year if they don't want to.

Betances turns 26 in March. He had a 2.68 ERA for Scranton.

GREAT CESAR? Right now, Cashman said Cesar Cabral could be the lefty reliever out of the pen. The Yankees have interest in retaining Boone Logan.

NO RULE V: The Yankees are at 40 players so they won't be picking anyone in the Rule V Draft. Cashman said he may take off for New York before it starts. He said he expects the Yankees to lose a player.

THE PRICE OF STEW: To complete the Chris Stewart deal, the Yankees have acquired RHP Kyle Haynes. At Single-A West Virginia, Haynes went 1-5 with a 2.38 ERA. He struck out 85 and walked 36 in 41 games. Nice numbers.

JOURNALISM: Here is Cashman talking poolside about everything. The guy to the left seems attentive.
