Ellsbury was vague on how his tight right calf was feeling, what he would do today, and when we could expect to see him on the field again.
New York Yankees
"I'm gonna go talk to them, gonna go hit right now, do a normal, pretty much throw, hit, do all that stuff, so then, uh, just talk to them about it," he said. "We just want it 100 percent. It’s just one of those things when I step on that field you’ll ask me how it feels and I’ll know even before I step on that field that it’ll be fine when I play in that game, so that’s how we want it."
Asked to describe precisely what he was feeling and how the injury was limiting his ability to play since it first arose Saturday, Ellsbury said, "Well, I really didn’t even feel it. I was scheduled to be off that day anyway. I still went through a normal day that day. It’s just something that we just want it 100 percent before I step on. It’s not one of those things where I try it on the field and see how it is. I’ll know when I’m on that field that it’s already 100 percent."
And when he was asked if he thought he might be able to play tomorrow when the Yankees travel to Disney World to play the Braves, Ellsbury said, "I don’t know. I don’t want to say yet, just because I haven’t talked to them. I'm going to go hit. I got loose right now, go hit, throw, hit off the tee, just kinda do my normal routine, go stretch out in the weight room and go talk to them."
So all we know for sure is Ellsbury is not playing today. Here's who is:
Derek Jeter SS
Michael Pineda RHP
Aside from Ellsbury and Brian McCann, pretty much a representative Yankees lineup.
Here's today's Red Sox:
Jonny Gomes DH
Mike Carp LF
Corey Brown RF
Felix Doubront LHP
Cut-down day: Joe Girardi spent much of the morning trimming the roster. No names officially announced yet, but pitchers Brian Gordon, Jim Miller and Mark Montgomery were among those called into the manager's office, and Gordon was seen getting a ball autographed by Jeter after he came out. Also, outfielder Jose Pirela was seen packing a bag. We'll have the entire list of the reassigned players when the Yankees release it.
Today's game is being broadcast on a number of outlets -- YES, ESPN, WFAN -- but that won't stop me from tweeting about it. Check out my Twitter feed, @ESPNNYYankees, for in-game updates and banter.
