Notes: Joe Girardi made it official that Masahiro Tanaka will not pitch in the season-opening series in Houston but will make his MLB debut on Friday, April 4 against the Blue Jays in Toronto ... Michael Pineda, named the No. 5 starter shortly before the game, will go on Saturday April 5. Girardi said Pineda will be left behind in Tampa to make one more start in a minor-league game on Sunday after the rest of the team leaves for Houston ... Girardi said he was not "absolutely sure" that Jacoby Ellsbury, who got 6 at-bats as the DH in a minor-league game today, would start the season with the Yankees, but "I feel pretty good about it." Ellsbury will play in another minor-league game on Wednesday while the rest of his team travels to Dunedin to play the Blue Jays. Girardi said depending on weather conditions, Ellsbury might play the outfield ... Brendan Ryan says he feels "twice as good every day as he did the day before," but still is almost a lock to begin the season on the disabled list. Ryan had a cortisone shot that provided some relief to the spasms in his upper back but still has had just 8 at-bats this spring.
