NEW YORK -- Mark Teixeira's MRI on Monday showed a Grade 1 strain, giving him a feeling of relief and optimism that he can return in two weeks.
"I was hoping it would only be a seven days, two weeks type thing," Teixeira said. "Again, I didn't want to go on the DL. Again, we can't play short and push it this early. Hopefully, the two weeks will be plenty of time."
Teixeira will start an exercise program on Tuesday. "I knew it wasn't anything major," Teixeira said.
Teixeira only played in 15 games in 2013 because of wrist surgery.
He said he was among the players who teased Derek Jeter for not busting out of the gate on his near home run in the fifth inning on Monday.
"Listen, we've all done it," said Teixeira, who then referred to Jeter's upcoming birthday in June. "For Derek, at 40, we're going to let him slide. He's an old man."
