ANAHEIM, Calif. -- "The Happiest Place on Earth" may be right down the road from here, but Angel Stadium has been anything but "The Friendliest Place on Earth" for the Yankees, who begin a three-game series against the Angels tonight at 10:05 p.m. The Angels have won six of the past nine games played between the two teams here, and 26 of the past 39 since 2005.
The Yankees face Jered Weaver (2-2, 4.00) in the series opener, and he is 6-4 lifetime against them. But the good news if you're a Yankees fan is that his career ERA is 5.93, and last year, they beat him twice and posted an 11.45 ERA against him in two starts.
Here's the lineup Weaver will face tonight:
Derek Jeter SS
David Phelps RHP
NOTES: Joe Girardi is sitting the slumping Carlos Beltran (3-for-29, .103 on the homestand) tonight in favor of Ichiro Suzuki, who, Girardi said, "has been swinging the bat well." ... The Yankees are likely to add Brendan Ryan for tomorrow's game, the first one in which they will be able to add a player to replace Michael Pineda, who is on suspension for one more day due to last week's rainout. Pineda (back muscle strain) will be placed on the DL tomorrow. ... Girardi hinted Alfredo Aceves, who pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday, could enter the starting rotation at some point. “We haven’t really talked about it, but anytime someone pitches well over distance, it’s going to trigger a thought,” Girardi said. ... Phelps, who hasn't started since July 4 of last year, is expected to be able to give the Yankees 85-90 pitches tonight. Phelps has made three career appearances and one start vs. the Angels. He is 0-1, with a 3.38 ERA in 13 1/3 innings pitched.
