BALTIMORE -- Joe Girardi has no idea who will start Sunday in place of the injured Masahiro Tanaka. The newly acquired Jeff Francis seemed like he might be a logical choice, except he last pitched July 2 and only threw 14 pitches.
"He’s a guy that’s probably in the 30 to 40 pitch range right now," Girardi said, noting that Francis hadn't arrived yet. "We’ll talk to him when he gets here and see what he’s been doing the last few days."
So who will start Sunday? Chase Whitley, maybe?
"I don’t know," Girardi said. "Like I said, it all depends. If you get in long game Saturday like we did the other night, maybe not. So it all really depends on what we use."
CC's new doctors: CC Sabathia changed his checkups on his injured right knee. Instead of going to see Dr. James Andrews on Monday, Sabathia has already been checked out by Dr. Keith Meister, the Rangers' team physician, and plans on being seen by Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Dodgers. Sabathia is expected to miss the rest of the season and could face microfracture surgery, which might mean the end of his career.
Jimenez out: Ubaldo Jimenez, scheduled to start against the Yankees on Saturday, was placed on the DL by the Orioles. Jimenez has an ankle injury. Chris Tillman is now expected to start Saturday and Kevin Gausman will likely start Sunday.
