Pete Mackanin has left the Yankees organization to become the third-base coach on Ryne Sandberg's staff with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Mackanin, whom we mentioned as a potential replacement for manager Joe Girardi, had been a scout with the Yankees, covering the NL and AL West and NL Central. He also did some work in Japan, including looking at Masahiro Tanaka.
The right-handed Tanaka, 24, could be the Yankees' big offseason pitching addition.
Sandberg's staff also includes former Yankees coach Larry Bowa, who will serve as Sandberg's bench coach. If the Yankees' managerial job were to open, Mackanin and Bowa could be candidates.
