Hughes to S.D.? Not so fast

There has been an assumption that Phil Hughes will end up on a National League team with a big ballpark, ideally located in his home state of California. Based on these factors, a lot of people in baseball have pointed to San Diego as a landing spot for the 27-year-old pitcher.

Not so fast.

A source familiar with San Diego's thinking said the Padres are not enamored with Hughes after his 4-14, 5.19 ERA performance in 2013. Anyone who has covered Hughes could only come away with the impression that he is a good guy and a stand-up guy, but the source said there is a question about his work ethic.

The source said that if Hughes couldn't fully commit in New York, what would make him take it up a notch in a place like San Diego? Plus, the Padres are encouraged by their starting pitching, the source said. The source added while the Padres are leaning against Hughes, he warned that they are just starting their final plans for the offseason and, although unlikely, could pivot.

Hughes' season was so poor that the Yankees are unable to give him a qualifying offer of $14.1 million out of fear he would take it. Thus, the Yankees will not receive a draft pick when Hughes leaves.
