Fernando Martinez, whose regular season was cut short at Triple-A Buffalo by a knee injury, is expected to be ready to play winter ball for Ken Oberkfell's Escogido team in the Dominican Republic in about two weeks.
Martinez spent Aug. 7-20 with the Mets, during which he went 3-for-18 with two RBIs, but he played most of the year in the International League when uninjured. He missed 38 games because of two disabled-list trips -- May 14-23 with a left hamstring strain, and Aug. 25 through the end of the minor league season with a right knee injury that did not require surgery.
Martinez, 22, has experienced injuries throughout his career. Those limited him to 76 games in 2006 in Class A, 60 games in 2007 with Double-A Binghamton, 90 games between the B-Mets and rehabbing in the Gulf Coast League in 2008 and 74 games in 2009 between Buffalo and the Mets.
