Jose Reyes stopped by the Old Navy on 34th St. in Manhattan on Thursday afternoon to visit New York City schoolchildren who were being rewarded for improving their attendance. He was joined by deputy mayor Dennis Walcott and schools chancellor Joel Klein. The visit came a day after the Mets' picked up Reyes' 2011 club option for $11 million.
When Reyes signed the contract four years ago, the deadline for picking up the option was written into the deal as Nov. 15. However, a subsequent players association/MLB agreement regarding contracts of this type resulted in the Mets needing to pick up the option within three days of the conclusion of the World Series.
While Reyes offered no definitive verdict during his Thursday appearance, he seemed perfectly content to play out the option year before talking about a possible long-term deal with the Mets.
