Former Cowboys linebacker and assistant coach Dat Nguyen has become the inside linebackers coach at his alma mater, Texas A&M, according to the school. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones planned to extend Nguyen's contract with the club, but the assistant left Valley Ranch without offering an explanation to the media.
It's been widely reported that Nguyen wanted to become a full-time position coach and that wasn't yet an option with the Cowboys. He was linked to the USC opening at one point, but now he's returning to College Station, Texas.
I think the college level will actually be a better fit for Nguyen. He's beloved by Aggies fans across the country, and his NFL credentials will give him an edge in the recruiting process. That said, it's still surprising that Nguyen left the Cowboys without another offer in hand.
