Checking in from Denver

DENVER -- What is better than preseason football?

Preseason football in lousy weather.

It has been pouring rain here for the better part of two days. However, the rain stopped about an hour ago and the field, which had a tarp on it during the rainstorm, looks decent. Still, if the rain comes back it will be interesting to see if Dallas coach Wade Phillips and Denver coach Mike Shanahan take out key players to avoid unnecessary injuries.

Several key Denver players are not playing. Cornerback Champ Bailey, his brother, linebacker Boss Bailey, center Tom Nalen and wide receiver Darrell Jackson are all not playing because of various injuries. None of the injuries, at this point, are expected to extend into the regular season.

For Dallas, cornerback Terence Newman and linebacker Anthony Spencer are among the players on the sideline. Meanwhile, 12 Cowboys' personnel are being wired tonight as part of HBO's "Hard Knocks" series.
