A weekly examination of the Redskins' ESPN.com Power Ranking:
Preseason: 10 | Last Week: 31| ESPN.com Power Ranking since 2002
The battle for the honor of the NFL’s worst team is still being won by the Houston Texans. The Redskins, though, remain in good position to catch them. And, really, wouldn’t that be quite the honor? OK, maybe not.
The St. Louis Rams, of course, are rooting for the Redskins to drop one more spot in the ESPN Power Rankings. That likely would mean they have the NFL’s worst record, and the Rams would then own the No. 1 draft pick this spring.
This season keeps bringing more joy to Redskins fans. The good news is the Redskins will have a high second-round pick in 2014. Yes, it’s come to that.
My gut tells me the Redskins will win again this season and leave the Rams seething over the fact that they’ll have to now pick second to complete the Robert Griffin III trade. Imagine their fury, which might be disguised with smiles and high-fives and champagne toasts.
But let’s go over the last two games just to gauge the Redskins’ chances for falling to the bottom spot.
Washington: The Redskins host Dallas and play at the New York Giants. The Cowboys just blew a 23-point lead to the dangerous Matt Flynn. You can just add Dallas to the list of teams Flynn has victimized in his long career. In all seriousness, the Cowboys have a terrible defense, and if the Redskins’ passing game clicks as it did Sunday, an upset will be in the making. The Giants are ranked only five spots ahead of Washington, thanks in part to Eli Manning’s desire to share the ball with opponents. So a win there is possible, too. Winning both games? Whoa, slow down. But one win? Possible.
Houston: I had to double-check their schedule, so I Googled "Houston Texans" and the first headline I saw said this: “Terrible Texans hope to bounce back against Denver." Good luck with that. Does it matter that it’s at home? Of course not. The real hope occurs in the finale at Tennessee. The Titans have lost three straight entering Sunday’s game at Jacksonville.
By the way, if all of this doesn’t make you feel any better -- and why should it? -- then read the rankings while standing on your head.
