Cowboys' Phillips challenges his reserves

When Wade Phillips gives you an earful, you know you've done something wrong. Reserve cornerback Courtney Brown found that out last Saturday when he was flagged for pass interference. The normally mild-mannered Phillips lost his temper and lit into Brown.

Now, Phillips is throwing down a challenge to the other reserves. You won't see any starters when the Cowboys play the Vikings at the Metrodome tonight, but there are still a few spots on the 53-man roster up for grabs. Here's Phillips' rallying cry to his reserves:

"I told them all, 'This is your opportunity,' " Phillips said. "Don't look back and say, 'Well, I didn't get a chance.' Show us something. I challenge them all. That's what you have to do. You have to give it your all and let the chips fall. I want them to play that way."

I'm looking forward to seeing what Kevin Ogletree can do as a starter. And it will be interesting to see Tashard Choice as the feature back. He could end up with some nice numbers. You also need to see how Bobby Carpenter performs at inside linebacker. He has had his moments, but I'd like to see how he holds up with some extended action in the first half. Let's also take a long look at rookie linebacker Victor Butler. He was all over the field during training camp. And he may be the last guy standing from this brittle draft class.

We'll meet back here tomorrow and review the game. But mainly we'll be focused on all the cuts, which are due by 6 p.m. ET. I know the Giants will wait until the very last second to announce their cuts. I seem to recall the Eagles doing things a little early in the past. We'll keep you posted.
