In a statement released to CNBC on Thursday, Nike denied signing Michael Vick to a sponsorship agreement. On Wednesday, the managing director of the agency that represents Vick had announced that a deal was in place. Here's how Nike responded:
"Nike does not have a contractual relationship with Michael Vick," Nike spokesman Kejuan Wilkins said in the statement to CNBC. "We have agreed to supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike."
So did Vick's agency think that all the free shoes serves as an implied contract? I think not. They likely thought they could use even the smallest of agreements to bolster Vick's image -- and of course his pocketbook. Vick's representatives naively believed that Nike would play along with their announcement.
Hat tip to CNBC's Darren Rovell for smelling a rat in this "deal."
