Cowboys' Marcus Spears placed on IR

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears (calf) and rookie safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (ankle) have been placed on injured reserve and they'll be replaced on the roster by defensive ends Jeremy Clark and Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, according to ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon. Spears has been one of the most durable players on the Cowboys' roster since joining the club as a first-round pick in '05.

Given his contract status, Spears has likely played his last down with Dallas. He was a steady player and leader for the Cowboys, but he was offered a lower contract tender than two of his backups this past offseason. He knew the writing was on the wall, but he was one of the few players on defense who continued to fight the past few weeks.

Clark has spent time with the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles while Saddler-McQueen went to training camp with the Cowboys. They won't likely fit into the Cowboys' long-term plans, but you'll probably see them on the field immediately based on all the injuries.

For now, Tony Romo (collarbone) will keep fighting to return to the starting lineup in December. I still think it's a long shot, but Garrett at least wants to give him an opportunity.
