Redskins position battles

Safety: Stuart Schweigert vs. Reed Doughty

The Redskins were happy to add Schweigert to the roster because he started 42 games in four seasons with the Raiders. He'll compete with Doughty, who became the starter at strong safety during the Redskins' playoff run. Schweigert is a better fit at free safety, but second-year player LaRon Landry has that spot nailed down. In the end, Doughty will probably win the job, but Schweigert will give the team some depth at what was a thin position.

Third receiver: Devin Thomas vs. Malcolm Kelly vs. James Thrash

I'm assuming Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El will hold down the starting spots through training camp, but Thomas or Kelly could eventually knock down the door. Randle El is a nice player, but he only scored one touchdown last season. The Redskins' offense couldn't locate wide receivers in the end zone for weeks at a time. James Thrash only caught nine passes, but two of them were for touchdowns. Thomas has a legitimate chance to push Randle El early in the season. Vinny Cerrato raved to me recently about Thomas' exceptional speed and size. Kelly has a chip on his shoulder after slipping in the draft. The Redskins think he'll give them another big target in the red zone.
