Allen seeks extra advice

ESPN's John Clayton reported an interesting nugget during this week's "Inside the Huddle" segment: Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen has hired one of his former defensive line coaches as a private coach and mentor.

Beginning in Week 5, longtime NFL coach Bob Karmelowicz has either met with or spoken to Allen regularly to work on "body mechanics," Allen said Thursday. Karmelowicz was Kansas City's defensive line coach when the Chiefs drafted Allen in 2004.

In the nine games since the pair reunited, Allen has been credited with 10.5 sacks.

"He was my coach when I first came into the NFL," Allen said. "So we stay in contact. He helps me with my body mechanics. He's a great coach. It's always great to get an outside view from somebody who can watch the way your body works and tweak you here or there."

Allen also worked with Karmelowicz last season during a two-game NFL suspension. He finished the year with 15.5 sacks in 14 games.
