INDIANAPOLIS -- Thanks to reader Spence of Saginaw, who pointed us in the direction of a recent ESPN radio interview with former Detroit offensive lineman Lomas Brown, who has informally worked with some of the Lions' offensive linemen in recent years.
Interestingly, Brown independently noted that left tackle Jeff Backus is better suited to play guard and suggested the Lions focus on drafting a left tackle this year. Here's the relevant part of Brown's answer, which comes around the six-minute mark:
"If you could find a left tackle to go in and, say, replace Jeff Backus and move Jeff Backus inside, to the guard position .... I just think he's built to be more of a guard than a left tackle."
Brown made the comments before this week's series of stories on the topic. Lions coach Jim Schwartz is scheduled to speak with reporters Thursday morning at the combine, and I'm sure that question will arise.
