It's Culpepper for the Lions

Well, my wish list for Black and Blue quarterback competitions will be 50 percent fulfilled this weekend.

Minnesota will start Sage Rosenfels, but Detroit coach Jim Schwartz announced Friday that Daunte Culpepper will start Saturday against Atlanta. Rookie Matthew Stafford will play in the second quarter.

Again, this doesn't necessarily mean Culpepper is winning the Lions' competition. And after his relative inactivity over the past few years, I suppose it's important to find out exactly what kind of game condition he is in. But in terms of the competition, I would be more interested in finding out how Stafford would react to starting -- both from a maturity standpoint and against the Falcons' first-team defense.

Ultimately, I'm sure we'll find out. Stafford likely will start the Lions' second preseason game. But for this weekend, at least, it's Rosenfels and Culpepper.
