NFC North Week 12 Quarterback Report

Week 12 didn't bring glory to NFC North quarterbacking, and with five weeks left in the season, we should accept the fact that none of our starters are going to have a career year. Only one is ranked among the NFL's top 20 quarterbacks in both passer rating and Total Quarterback Rating, as the chart shows.

On with it, with our weekly help from Jacob Nitzberg of ESPN Stats & Information.

Jay Cutler

Passer rating: 86.5

QBR: 76.2

Action plays: 37

Comment: In his first game back after a concussion, Cutler played a conservative and efficient game that aided the Bears' pass protection. He attempted just two passes that traveled more than 15 yards in the air, both of which fell incomplete, and was sacked once -- when he tripped over the feet of center Roberto Garza in the first quarter. Otherwise, Cutler was especially effective in the decisive first half, completing 15 of 17 passes -- including 6-for-6 on third down -- to help the Bears take a 98 percent win probability into the locker room at halftime based on ESPN's model.

Matthew Stafford

Passer rating: 85.5

QBR: 72.7

Action plays: 70

Comment: QBR suggests Stafford's performance was more effective than passer rating would indicate last Thursday against the Houston Texans. He had 246 yards on 14 completions in the first half and finished the game with nine completions on 16 third-down attempts. All nine completions resulted in first downs. But the Texans slowed him downfield considerably after halftime, and he completed just 1 of 7 attempts thereafter on passes that traveled 15 yards or more past the line of scrimmage.

Aaron Rodgers

Passer rating: 81.9

QBR: 17.3

Action plays: 38

Comment: Rodgers' QBR suggested Sunday night was one of the least effective games of his career; it was the lowest in a game with at least 20 action plays since Week 4 of the 2008 season. Our eyes told us Rodgers was part of an entire Green Bay Packers offense that got overwhelmed by the New York Giants, especially its offensive line. Rodgers was under duress, sacked or hit while throwing on 17 of his 33 drop backs. That 51.5 percentage is the highest against any NFL quarterback in a single game this season. For his part, Rodgers completed less than 50 percent of his first-down throws (4-of-11) for the first time this season.

Christian Ponder

Passer rating: 58.2

QBR: 10.3

Action plays: 48

Comment: Once again, Ponder got almost no downfield traction. Only one of his 22 completions traveled more than 7 yards in the air, and he didn't complete any of his eight passes that traveled more than 11 yards in the air. As a result, Ponder accumulated just 159 yards on 43 attempts. But he was also let down more than in most games by teammates, who conservatively dropped six passes, and the absence of receiver Percy Harvin and later tight end Kyle Rudolph was noticeable.
