EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Brett Favre joked Wednesday that he checks his mail for “something ticking” or maybe some “white powder.”
At least I think he was kidding. Favre
As we’ve discussed this week, Favre’s return to Green Bay will enflame the emotions of Packer Nation. We’re debating just how Packer fans should treat him Sunday at Lambeau Field. Wednesday, I asked Favre if he is or will be bothered by some of the angriest fan reactions.
“No,” he said. “Because in my opinion, if you’re a true fan you’re a true fan.”
Favre acknowledged that even those who have remained loyal will root against him Sunday.
“But for the most part,” Favre said, “[it should be] ‘Hey, hope this guy does well, but hope the Packers go all the way.’ Now, the people that have jumped ship or whatever completely, what can I do? And I’m not going to concern myself with it. Because we have gotten a lot of letters and responses from people, to just this year, but the last couple years, [that were] very supportive, still very supportive of the Packers. But I’d call them true fans.
“There was always Brett Favre haters out there. And that will never change. I really and truly don’t think about it that much. Because I know what I’ve done, what I was a part of. And I’m proud of that, and I think that speaks for itself.”
It’s possible Favre doesn’t spend much time thinking about it, but I believe he cares deeply about how he’s perceived both nationally and by Packers fans. As a result, it sounds like he and his family are taking steps to minimize their presence Sunday in Green Bay. Favre said only two members of his family are attending the game and denied he booked dozens of hotel rooms near Lambeau Field earlier this summer.
“They’ve handled it about as good as you would expect,” Favre said. “I mean, there’s anxiety and nervousness and all that stuff, but for the most part it’s been fine.”
One of my reporter colleagues asked Favre if he thought he would enjoy this week or if he wanted it to be over. Favre said, “I think I’m going to enjoy it” and that “I do want to enjoy this week” but had the body of language of someone who just wants to get to Sunday. He also said he hasn’t been feeling well since last Friday. Maybe it was an early-onset case of Lambphobia.
