GREEN BAY, Wis. -- At the end of almost every play, Randall Cobb grabbed at his right arm and kept it tight to his body.
Clearly, the Green Bay Packers receiver was in pain.
Yet there he was on the field through the end of Tuesday’s practice. He even had three passes thrown his way during the final period, a no-huddle drill, and he hauled in two of them.
For two straight days, Cobb has practiced with a wrap on the biceps injury he sustained last week. Considering how often coach Mike McCarthy talks about being smart with injured players, it was somewhat surprising to see Cobb on the field when he was in such obvious pain.
“Trying to be smart and be tough at the same time is difficult for me,” Cobb said after practice. “But I understand that I have limitations, and I have to be smart about it. But it’s hard and difficult at times.”
When asked whether he was being smart by practicing on Tuesday, Cobb simply said: “No.”
“It’s something that we understand what the injury is, and we wouldn’t put him out there if we thought he was in jeopardy of moving forward and getting healthy,” McCarthy said. “But every case is different.”
Cobb did not play in last Friday’s preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals and considering Jordy Nelson will miss the entire preseason because of a knee injury, the number of snaps quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have with his top receivers is going to be limited between now and the Sept. 8 opener at San Francisco.
Cobb led the Packers with 80 receptions last season and might have an even bigger role this season, so it’s understandable that he wants to be on the field as much as possible during training camp.
“I know at some point during the season I’m going to be in pain, and I’m going to have to play, and I’m going to have to be productive when I do play,” Cobb said. “So trying to push through right now is more of a mindset for me. It’s nothing to be worried about. I may look like I’m in a lot of pain, and I may be in a lot of pain, but I’ll be fine.”
