My NFC West colleague Mike Sando just reported this news item: The NFL will not suspend Chicago defensive tackle Tommie Harris for punching Arizona guard Deuce Lutui last Sunday at Soldier Field. It’s expected that Harris will be fined for the incident, but he will be eligible to play Thursday night at San Francisco.
The punch was blatant and Lutui was essentially defenseless, but it might have been piling on for the NFL to suspend Harris. Because it happened on the fourth play of the game, Harris’ subsequent ejection essentially served as a one-game suspension.
As we discussed Monday, there is nothing stopping Bears coach Lovie Smith from supplementing the NFL discipline. At the very least, Smith could remove Harris from the starting lineup to emphasize Harris' sole accountability for his action.
