GREEN BAY, Wis. – If four straight wins has the first-place Green Bay Packers feeling good about themselves, leave it to coach Mike McCarthy to bring them back to reality.
“He’s had some good one-liners today, huh?” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Thursday after a few of McCarthy’s news-conference quotes were recited to him.
Or maybe that's just what happens during Packers-Bears week, especially when it's on "Monday Night Football." Either way, McCarthy delivered his message loud and clear.
“Mike does a good job of putting signs on the doors and walls [to] to keep us focused,” Rodgers said.
At which point, Rodgers learned around the corner to see what the sign on the locker-room door said. It read: “Intensity.”
If McCarthy’s tone in the team meeting was anything it like it was in the media auditorium, his message could not have been mistaken.
Here’s a sampling of his one-liners from Thursday:
It started when he was asked about the impressive play of rookie left tackle David Bakhtiari. To which McCarthy said: “I’m not really in the mood to bang drums about anything. This is the Chicago Bears and Packers playing.”
He then added: “I know we’ve had success, but I don’t think this is the time to jump up and down and think we’ve arrived.”
On the Packers-Bears rivalry, he said: “This is the game every year. In my humble opinion, this is the game in the NFL.”
