Bucs rookie headed to Hall of Fame

TAMPA, Fla. -- Cody Grimm is a seventh-round draft pick who is not even guaranteed a roster spot with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But Grimm, a safety, already has a ticket to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Well, he will as soon as he finds out what flight to get on Saturday morning.

“I don’t even know,’’ Grimm said after Friday morning’s practice. “My dad’s so busy he hasn’t even texted me the flight time yet.’’

Grimm’s father is Russ Grim. He’s being inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday evening. That coincides with a night practice/pep rally at Raymond James Stadium. But Cody Grimm is getting the night (and Saturday morning) off from practice. That’s all fine with coach Raheem Morris.

“I didn’t even say anything about it,’’ Cody Grimm said. “Coach Morris called my dad before camp even started and said, if my dad wants me there, he’ll give me the day off from practice.’’

The Buccaneers will be off Sunday and Grimm said he’ll be back on the practice field Monday. In the meantime, Grimm said the next day or so is all about his father.

“I’m excited for him,’’ Grimm said. “I know it took him a while to get in. But he’s an even-keel guy so he didn’t say much in the years he didn’t get in. This year, I was actually at his house when he got in and he was just overwhelmed with joy about it. He’s super excited about it.’’
