Around the NFC South

Time for an evening stroll through Wednesday's headlines across the NFC South.

Carolina running back DeAngelo Williams sat out practice with a foot injury. Coach John Fox wouldn’t say much about the outlook for Williams playing this week. If Williams can’t go, it likely will mean increased carries for Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson.

Tampa Bay rookie safety Cody Grimm and his father, Russ, will be on opposing sides Sunday. Russ Grimm is assistant head coach for the Arizona Cardinals.

Three of Tampa Bay’s five regular starters on the offensive line missed practice with injuries Wednesday. Center Jeff Faine is out for an extended period, guard Keydrick Vincent missed the last game and his status remains uncertain this week and right tackle Jeremy Trueblood, who had to leave Sunday’s game with an injury, also missed practice.

With a huge game coming up Sunday night against Pittsburgh, the Saints haven’t taken any big strides on the injury front. Running backs Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas and cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Jabari Greer each missed another day of practice.

Courtesy of D. Orlando Ledbetter, here’s Atlanta coach Mike Smith’s assessment of this year’s crop of rookies, plus last year’s top two draft picks, Peria Jerry and William Moore, who are pretty close to rookies because each missed most of last season with injuries.
