Mocking NFC South with Todd McShay

Todd McShay has his latest Insider mock draft out and this one includes some backup scenarios for each team.

I can’t give away everything here, but let’s run through some highlights.

McShay has Carolina taking Cam Newton at No. 1. That goes along with everything I’m hearing. The Panthers still are going through the final stages of their process and being thorough, but all signs are pointing to them soon making a decision to take Newton.

At No. 20, we’ll skip right ahead to one of McShay’s backup scenarios for Tampa Bay. He says Aqib Talib’s legal troubles and uncertain future could result in the Bucs taking cornerback Jimmy Smith. McShay says Smith has been clearing up some character concerns of his own. But I don’t know that Tampa Bay can take any chances, because the Bucs are under a lot of scrutiny following a series of off-field problems. The Bucs also are an organization that cares a lot (sometimes maybe way too much) about how other people view them. Replacing one troubled guy with another might not look good. I also think if Talib isn't in the equation, the Bucs still have some decent talent at cornerback and wouldn't need to draft one in the first round. You also can make any group of corners look a lot better when you put a pass rush in front of them.

McShay has the Saints taking Illinois defensive tackle Corey Liuget at No. 24. Entirely possible and he could team with Sedrick Ellis and Shaun Rogers to suddenly give the Saints a very strong rotation in the middle of the line.

At No. 27, McShay has the Falcons taking Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn. Could happen, but I’m starting to get some vibes that receivers Torrey Smith and Jonathan Baldwin could be targets for Atlanta.
