Of course, what’s sparked all this talk is that the Saints drafted Alabama running back Mark Ingram last week. Besides Bush and Ingram, the Saints also have Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory and Lynell Hamilton.
That makes for a crowded backfield. But the Saints lost last season’s playoff game to Seattle, mainly because they ran out of healthy running backs. Maybe they’re just trying to fill the cupboard. Or maybe Bush really will be released the moment the lockout is lifted.
Trading him really is not an option because of Bush’s massive contract. He’s heading into the final season of his rookie deal and is to make $11.8 million in base salary and carry a $16 million salary-cap figure. No team is going to trade for that contract.
If the Saints cut Bush, they’ll save his salary, but they they’ll still be on the hook for $3.5 million in salary-cap space. If they keep him, they’ll almost certainly give him a contract extension that would knock down his cap figure for this season.
