New Orleans coach Sean Payton met with the media Thursday for the first time since having knee surgery Monday.
Payton also was able to observe his team practicing for the first time since he was injured in a sideline collision with tight end Jimmy Graham in Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay. Payton said he will have to do his game-day coaching from the press box for the immediate future and the logistics of that still are being worked out.
Although he’s known for his energy, even on the practice field, Payton said he’ll have to change some things in the short term.
"I have to be smart and realistic," Payton said. "I don't want to be stubborn or foolish."
Payton said he knows he faces a lengthy rehabilitation, which places him in a position he’s not used to.
"It's different, you're a patient instead of a teacher,’’ Payton said.
