The NFL has made the official announcement that New Orleans safety Roman Harper has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
That’s significant on several levels. First off, the NFC South largely has been overlooked in the NFL’s weekly awards this season. Harper’s honor marks only the fourth time an NFC South player has won a player of the week award.
It’s also significant because Harper became the first NFC South player this season to win two weekly awards. Harper also was selected in Week 2. Tampa Bay cornerback Ronde Barber won the defensive award in Week 3 and New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees won the offensive award in Week 7. No NFC South player has won Special Teams Player of the Week this season.
Harper earned the honor by posting 13 tackles and a sack in Sunday’s 26-23 overtime victory against Atlanta. Six of Harper’s tackles took place within four yards of the line of scrimmage and two of them were for losses.
