The Buccaneers just announced that Sunday’s home game with the Redskins has not sold out at the 72-hour mark before kickoff. That means the game cannot be broadcast within a 75-mile range of Tampa.
Wish I could say this is a surprise, but it’s not. The Bucs have sold out only two home games since the start of the 2010 season.
They even have tried to take advantage of the NFL’s new threshold that requires only 85 percent of non-premium seats to be sold to avoid local television blackouts. But they still are coming up short.
We’ve touched on the reasons (the economy, Florida’s transient nature, etc.) many times before. But I think the biggest factor here is that fans still haven’t figured out what the Bucs are all about with new coach Greg Schiano.
That’s completely understandable. The Bucs had a very strong performance in their opening win against Carolina and came close when they played the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants. But last week’s loss to Dallas was a disappointment. The defense played well in that game, but the offense struggled mightily.
Until the Bucs start putting quality offense and defense together and winning some games, they’re going to have a tough time selling out.
